CEB director Pamela Jesterand Susan Ye '11. CEB created the award to acknowledge the crucial role that research and writing skills play in the practice of law. The award is granted to the best brief produced in each school's first-year research and writing program. Instructors select the top briefs, which are then reviewed by CEB's award selection committees. Ye and Bebenek's briefs stood out for their clear thinking, thorough and accurate legal analysis, and persuasiveness. Bebenek credits Professor David Horton and his teaching assistants in the class. "They poured a huge amount of time into helping us craft our arguments, and gave everyone extensive one-on-one feedback. That definitely left a mark on the finished product. This award is such an honor because throughout the past year, I had many chances to see just how high the quality of my classmates' legal writing is, and the effort that went into everyone's briefs." Ye modestly tells of her surprise upon learning she won. "I know that my fellow nominees are no doubt excellent writers. Writing the appellate brief took time and effort, but it was the culmination of an entire year devoted to the same fact pattern, taking it from the initial stages of litigation, to complaint, to motions, and finally the appellate brief. It was a great process incorporating all the legal writing skills I had learned over the course of the year into this one final written project." As for future ambitions, Ye's interests lie in the law and motion aspect of litigation and Bebenek's in the field of intellectual property. CEB recruited a selection committee for each award composed of three practicing lawyers and judges who are alums of each respective law school. UC Davis School of Law Committee:
