About CEB

CEB is a self-supporting program of the University of California that is cosponsored by the State Bar of California. CEB is the go-to source for lawyers on information about the law, and the practice of law, in California.

Our mission: provide practical legal resources to help California lawyers achieve success.

Our Values

In fulfilling our mission, we aim to be:

  • Customer-centric: We provide practical tools and continually ask ourselves, "How does this help California lawyers?"
  • Trustworthy: We provide accurate, up-to-date information that our customers can rely on.
  • Innovative: We seek opportunities to continually improve.
  • Flexible: We are flexible and open-minded in responding to changes in the legal industry and the world.
  • Lifelong Learners: We celebrate and advance the improvement of the knowledge, skills, and competence of our customers and ourselves.

Connected to California

CEB is by and for California lawyers: our products are California-specific and feature the best and brightest lawyers in the state. We are located in Oakland, California and—unlike many other legal content providers—our writing, editing, and production take place in-state. Our close connection to California informs our work and results in better resources for our customers.

Connected to the Legal Community

Our commitment to the California legal community extends beyond our products and services. We are proud to support educational, outreach, and pro bono activities throughout the state.

We offer special discounts and programs to Legal Services Organizations as well as law students, professors, and young attorneys. Our interest in advancing the legal profession also has led us to issue or co-sponsor awards that recognize outstanding accomplishments:

  • Jack Berman Award recognizes the outstanding public service achievement of a lawyer in the first five years of practice
  • Traynor Moot Court Competition, a nationally recognized event, attracts students from many major law schools in the state. Each year, we present the CEB Award for Individual Achievement in Oral Argument
  • Award for Excellence in Legal Research and Writing rewards the best brief produced by first-year law students at participating University of California law schools
  • Spirit of CEB Awards acknowledges attorneys whose volunteer work with CEB has supported the continuing legal education and professional excellence of lawyers throughout the state

We regularly work with other organizations to sponsor or underwrite activities that advance our mission. Recent joint-efforts include work with the State Bar of California, California Young Lawyers Association, California Women Lawyers, the Los Angeles County Law Library.

History

CEB was founded in 1947 to educate veterans returning to the practice of law after service in World War II. It pioneered formal continuing legal education and modernized its presentation by providing short courses in locations that were convenient to California practitioners.

It was soon apparent that attorneys were as interested in written material as they were in the oral presentations, interest that translated into the development of the CEB practice book. From their initial appearance as modest handouts, practice books evolved into comprehensive, regularly updated, publications.

CEB's commitment to innovation produced early forays into tape recordings, video productions, telephone programs, and software. The CEB website was launched in 1997; online programs were introduced in 1999.

CEB continues to set the standard for the finest research, writing, and presentation by the top lawyers in the state.
